Chapter 278
by REX-NOVELISTSHer gaze swept over everyone, even pausing to meet the eyes of those three.
Unfortunately, she received no response.
Lin Qianhuan didn’t push it. She had given them the opportunity, and they had rejected it themselves.
After lunch, they rested before continuing to work. The wall was finally demolished before dark.
Sun Shouzhi and the others turned to leave, but Lin Qianhuan stopped them.
“Wages are paid daily. Come and collect your crystal cores.”
Surprise after surprise, the workers were so happy they couldn’t speak. The smiles on their faces couldn’t be hidden.
“Now I have money to buy something for the kids to eat.”
“My family is out of food. This is a good opportunity to go to the trading area.”
“Let’s go together. My shoes are so worn out, I’m going to the second-hand market to buy a sturdier pair.”
The workers left together, and even as their figures disappeared around the corner, the three men with glasses showed no signs of leaving.
Lin Qianhuan wasn’t annoyed. She turned and went back into the villa to prepare dinner.
She had just entered the kitchen and started cooking mung bean soup when she heard the sound of a key unlocking the door outside.
Drying her hands, Lin Qianhuan went to greet them at the door.
“You’re back. It’s earlier than I expected.”
Lin Wansheng, He Lu, and the others were covered in dust and dirt. Dried zombie blood could be seen on their cuffs and hems.
“After registering the team, we took on a zombie hunting mission as a side job. Several ability teams went together. It was so hot.”
Lin Wansheng held his dirty coat in his hand, frowning, clearly disgusted.
“I’m covered in stinky sweat, and my clothes are a mess. I’m going upstairs to shower and change.”
After taking a few steps, he suddenly turned his head. “Is big brother back?”
Lin Qianhuan shook her head. “No, it’s his first day. He must be very busy. Let’s eat first, and I’ll save some for him.”
“Okay.”
The others went upstairs to shower and change, while Lin Qianhuan continued to busy herself in the kitchen.
She couldn’t cook, but cold dishes were no problem. She would supplement them with ready-made meals from her space.
Before long, the table was filled with fragrant dishes for dinner.
Seafood in seasoned sauce, lemon shredded chicken, cold sesame noodles with gluten, braised shrimp in oil, tomato and potato stewed ribs, salted duck, spicy chicken.
Each person had a bowl of rice, paired with iced mung bean soup.
All the fatigue was swept away by the delicious food.
Lin Qianhuan put a shrimp on He Lu’s plate and asked casually, “Was today’s mission difficult? Why are you all so disheveled?”
Although the weather was hot, sweating was normal. But Lin Wansheng and the others’ clothes were excessively dirty – dust, dirt, dry grass, zombie blood – it would be difficult to wash off.
Hearing Lin Qianhuan ask this, Yi Hao’s face turned as ugly as if he had eaten a fly. He put down his chopsticks and began to complain.
“The mission was to hunt zombies, but the team leader insisted on taking us to search for supplies. The mission point was already near the edge of the safe zone, and to search for supplies we had to go further out. There were too many people, and the scent was too strong. Before long, it attracted a wave of zombies.”
He scratched his head in frustration. “That leader was useless. He panicked when he encountered the zombie wave and didn’t know how to command. More than half of the ability teams participating in the mission were killed or injured. We barely made it back.”
Lin Wansheng took a bite of rice, clearly angered.
“It’s really strange. How can anyone be a team leader? That guy almost caused everyone to be wiped out. I wonder if he’ll be punished.”
Lin Qianhuan shook her head when she heard this. “No, these kinds of good-for-nothings are usually appointed through connections. Even if they are punished, it’ll probably just be for show.”
She put a shrimp on her plate and continued, “Try not to take on these kinds of missions in the future. Too many people, too much trouble. You’re all tired today. Eat your dinner and get some rest. I’ll wait for big brother to come home.”
After a whole day of work, Lin Wansheng and the others were indeed tired. They didn’t refuse. They cleaned up the table and went back to their rooms to sleep.
Lin Qianhuan looked at the time. It was already 10:30 PM.
She made herself a cup of instant coffee and leaned back on the sofa with a comic book, waiting patiently.
Almost another hour passed before Lin Yixuan finally opened the villa door.
“Why aren’t you asleep?”
He changed into slippers, his forehead was covered in sweat, and he was clearly tired.
Lin Qianhuan put down her comic book and greeted him, handing him a glass of warm water.
“Waiting for you to come home. How was your first day? Did anyone cause you any trouble?”
Lin Yixuan took the glass and drank it all in one gulp, walking to the sofa and collapsing into it as if exhausted.
“They didn’t dare cause me trouble openly, but they didn’t hold back from tripping me up in secret. When I asked anything, the people under me said they didn’t know. When I asked for some data from the trading area from before, they just said it was lost or they forgot where they put it. After a whole day, I haven’t even grasped the basic situation of the trading area.”
Lin Qianhuan paused when she heard this and refilled his glass with water.
“That’s normal. Under Qu Sheng’s management, the trading area has long become a den of thieves. If you open the books, you’ll probably find that every account is a bad debt or a deficit. They can’t fill the holes from before, the funds that should be there have disappeared, and these people can’t explain where the money went. Naturally, they’ll do everything they can to prevent you from learning more about the trading area.”
After hesitating for a moment, Lin Qianhuan said softly, “Do you need me to go and help you?”
